Matt Burgess is an assistant professor of economics in the College of Business, and a Presidential Fellow in free expression and constructive dialogue, at the University of Wyoming. He studies the macroeconomics and political polarization of climate change, mathematical models of human-environment systems, natural resource management, and endangered species conservation. He is the host of the Grounded, Not Divided podcast, which aims to move conversations about important issues away from culture-war talking heads and toward leaders making concrete progress in the real world. He writes the Guided Civic Revival newsletter on Substack. He crossed over into economics from ecology, earning a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 2009 and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 2014. Before moving to the University of Wyoming in 2024, he was an assistant professor of environmental studies for six years at the University of Colorado Boulder.
